There’s absolutely no doubt that the world today is quickly approaching what we like to call the ‘Technological Revolution’. This is mostly because of the many technological innovations that we get to see every year. However, the one issue that still remains is the tech gender gap that has left the majority of women without any tech or coding skill. The lack of women coders is alarming. According to statistics, women take up only 28% of all computer degrees. It gets even worse at the employment level. As it turns out, only 25% of most programming jobs are taken up by women. This is not only a limiting factor to both women in coding and those in other fields, but also to the entire world which may never get to reach its full potential.
Teaching girls and women how to code should now be taken seriously as we need to have more women programmers in the world. Technological progress should be a joint effort between men and women. Of late, there have been new ways to encourage women interested in coding to pursue those dreams.
When you look at the workforce today, women don’t have the same privileges as men in the majority of companies. This brings us to issue of the gender pay gap where several women are actually paid much less than men today. While there are several reasons that explain the gap, one of the main reasons is that most women in the workforce are considered to have greater responsibilities due to the fact that they’re caregivers. Several studies show that there’s a severe drop in women’s earnings especially after giving birth to their first child. When you compare men with this same category of women, there’s no drop in pay even if they become first-time fathers. All the same, mothers and women in tech are unlikely to get job offers with substantial travel and long hours as a result of the belief that they’re limited to undertake major responsibilities at work. However, thanks to technology, we now have opportunities to work online where women can work anytime regardless of their location. These platforms also enable companies to promote accountability and transparency by managing their remote workforce. This allows female software engineers to continue with their project and give regular updates to the company without leaving home after birth.
Long gone are the days where you just had to walk into a classroom in order to learn something new. With the technological advancements today, female programmers that might have lost touch with their programming skills can now get a chance to rekindle their flame by taking online classes. This is not only an opportunity that can benefit women coders, but also other women that may want to learn the craft. There are several online platforms that offer flexible lesson hours. This means that even caregivers can have a go at it. A majority of those virtual learning platforms will offer both online and offline classes and still award you with a certificate upon the successful completion of your course. This creates more employment and growth opportunities for women coders in various companies and organizations.
We’re lucky to be at a time where digital agencies are reaching out to women coders to help solve the issue of little to no women representation in influential talks and events. These agencies are giving innovative, entrepreneurial, and technical women a voice to share their knowledge with the world. The reason why digital agencies are taking it upon themselves to empower women is because many times women are often underrated and underrepresented in so many instances. Some of the events where women rarely have a say include conferences and networking events. As much as women take part in them, they rarely get the chance to speak and inform others at tech event invitations and academic conferences. From recently recorded data, it was seen that women who were assigned to speak during such events were 29% while 27% were invited as guest speakers. This is why some firms have created digital platforms that focus mostly on women in the software Industry to encourage young girls and working women to take up the profession. Female coders have changed the world and also deserve some recognition.
Useful Tools for Developing Countries
While there are women in developed countries all over the world trying to fight for equal gender and work opportunities, there are also women in developing countries that are still struggling to acquire very basic rights. This has triggered several leaders in the world to employ the use of tech tools as a way of dealing with this issue. Even though the number may not be as large as the opposite gender, there are female coders that have changed the world. This is the kind of information that needs to be shared with other young girls in developing countries in order to encourage them to undertake STEM courses and carry on in the same footsteps. Consequently, non-governmental organizations are also putting the focus on women related celebrations such as Women’s History Month that touches on the same. These celebrations are very important as they boost morale in women.
It’s important that the world joins hands to promote and uplift women that have coding skills since that will allow them to be on par with their male counterparts. The more women we empower, the better the world will be, and the more capable we will be in solving global problems.
